CW: rape culture

QT lucymirandaward: The epidemic of drinks spiking targeting young women - students and not - in nightclubs has a horrific new variant: injecting women in the back or leg with the same drugs. I asked my daughter - first year at a UK uni - if she had heard of it and she sent me this:

personal safety of girls/women in nightlife

@neil in the 90s and 00s I was a DJ and rave organiser (so spent a lot of time in night time venues) - although the 90s rave scene was far from perfect for safety of girls/women this is a *considerably* worse situation than 20-30 years ago (and it was starting to deteriorate 10-20 years ago)

@vfrmedia @neil how do we stop this shit? Like, seriously? This is not acceptable.

@M0YNG @neil

start with teaching kids in junior school to respect each other (and not being shy about discussing topics such as relationships as early as age 7/8)..

also remind folk that late opening, hedonistic pubs and nightclubs are a comparatively recent thing in UK, they didn't exist in many regions until the 1990s and its not guaranteed that these places will remain open if people can't behave...

personal safety of girls/women in nightlife

@vfrmedia @neil frankly, shut them all immediately. If we have to go back to school and teach children to not be evil to each other we also have to go back to school and no one can have nice things if some of you can't behave.

Don't clubs have a duty of care to their patrons? Don't bouncers have a responsibility to not let people like that in?

Clearly they are failing, remove their license.

@M0YNG @neil

yes, there is a duty of care and already venues are shutting due to a lack of security staff (not suprisingly exacerbated by Brexit and cheap foreign labour becoming unavailable) it was concerning reading these articles to compare just how much security is now needed for a night time venue in comparison to a shopping centre or a large corporate office...

@M0YNG @neil

also since lockdown ended every other remaining pub and nightclub in Essex and Suffolk has been blighted by /some/ incident of violence, if its not the lasses getting spiked or harrassed its lads being attacked by other lads (often with weapons involved), and this is a whole unacceptable culture of violence that needs to be removed from society..

nightclub personal safety, violence, drugs

@M0YNG @neil

this has now escalated to the point Priti Patel is involved and young University students are planning to boycott nightclubs until these are "made safer".

Whats worse is this also seems to be a consequence of taboos of needle use disappearing from the club/party drugs scene which was already starting to happen in the 2000s (and the offender may not be using a fresh clean needle each time!)

@neil The amount of false accusations from women about rape is far higher than actual rape. No one is injecting women with needles in the back of the leg at the bar you sound dumb asf. If you'd like to actually read about rape culture why don't you check the MALE prison system.

@neil 😢
Being a woman is the most dangerous thing that can happen to a human being in this society; back then, now and in the future *deepsigh*

@neil

This was very saddening to read... At least people find ways to look after each other to stay safe as a group...

@neil OMG, I can't believe hypos are being used. That's absolutely rape-level offense even without later intercourse.
